mary in the junkyard
Few things were as reliable in 2024 as the answer to my favourite new discovery last year - mary in the junkyard over and over again
At Immergut, people often write little ‘love letters’ for the artists hidden in the depths of the website. This will now be one too.
Last August, mary in the junkyard sounded like something never heard before (somewhere between brand new and slightly complex) and at the same time like a familiar refuge. Like hiding in another world - with monsters that aren't monsters you could come to terms with and always a bit like the appearance of danger that turns into warmth and confidence.
They themselves describe their music as angry weepy chaos rock
The songs about ghosts, missing things, finding your own dreams (yes, what do we actually dream about?) and little paradises are carried by Claris' definitely fragile and almost angry voice. Together with Saya and David, the trio from London are part of the scene around the Windmill stage in Brixton. They make dreamy art rock - with concise guitars, folk, classical influences in the form of cello or viola sounds and everything remains very gentle.
I'm really looking forward to welcoming mary in the junkyard to the small (and sometimes scary) world of Neustrelitz at the end of May. It fits so well, the excitement is building, it's going to be a party, yeah!
P.S. Maybe this will remain the most reliable answer to the insider tip from the 25th Immergut Festival for me, who knows.
